Ok, this topic was bound to appear here. To give a brief explanation to those unaware of the term, a model minority is a certain minority within the population which excels, in terms of success and achievement, than other minorities (for a clearer understanding, click here). In this context we can consider the population, America and the perceived model minority, Asian American. I have to admit, according to various statistics measuring “socioeconomic achievement”, we’ve done pretty well, I mean the numbers pretty much speak for themselves. Then one has to think…do these statistics “sugar-coat” the truth? Isn’t there a big part missing in this “success” equation?

To start, what do we consider success or achievement? Does socioeconomic achievement mean “we made it”? Having the highest percentage of people obtaining college degrees, or making the most in median family income is great of course, but I’d like to think there’s more to it than that. Today, Asians are still being misrepresented in the political stage, entertainment, business and various other social platforms. We still face prejudice just as much, if not more, than other races in this great country.

Clearly there has been many who have achieved such success, but to generalize and say that Asian Americans are the model minority, is to ignore the fact that we really aren’t. That very notion of such a phrase given to us is preposterous when you think of what we still face. Stereotypes, discrimination, hate crimes…the list goes on. I don’t really want to say that we are exactly the same, compared to other races, but in terms of success and achievement…are we really that far apart from each other?
