Logitech G25 Steering Wheel….Possibly the Closest Thing to the “Real Thing”

Unless you have an enormous amount of money to spend, the Logitech G25 might possibly be the best steering wheel for racing games. I have owned one for over half a year, although I don’t spend as much time as I used to on it (having too much fun with my WRX :D), I occasionally fire up a racing game and pretend I’m a professional racer!

This peripheral is well thought out. It’s one of the few racing systems that has three pedals (for the throttle, brake, and clutch). When it comes to the design and finish, it gets high ratings. The steering wheel and shift knob & boot for the shifter are wrapped in leather. They also have good clamping mechanisms. It has an authentic feel to it, meaning it feels like you are driving a car. Each individually pedal is weighted to make it feel authentic as well. Although not perfect, it is quite close, however. The steering wheel has two buttons located in the center piece of the wheel (NOS!) and shift pedals. 900 degrees of rotation, when you move the wheel, it sounds and feels good. Although I haven’t gotten into this situation, I could see someone getting hurt by the shift pedals if they tried to rotate it all the way to the left or right, and just release it with their hands and arms in the way when the wheel is rotating back…but I would also have to say that it’s not the fault of the designers, this is some serious hardware! If anything that’s a pro more than a con! :DThe shifter has plenty of buttons for whatever you want to configure it to. With a turn of a switch, you can change it to sequential or H-shift. Wow…so including using the shift pedals on the wheels, you have 3 different ways of transmission (4 if you include automatic…but why would you want to do that?)! It feels great going through the gears and you can tell the difference, especially if you had experience using other wheels. As you would assume, Logitech did an awesome job with the pedals as well. The stainless steel pedals are weighted differently, giving you different resistance between the brake, throttle, and clutch. Definitely adds more onto the whole simulation effect. If you are wondering if the clutch works well, it certainly does. Most games that I have played don’t fully support the clutch (For example, Need for Speed: Carbon and Underground only used the clutch to go neutral), except for a few such as Live for Speed. This game is awesome, and also comes very close to the real thing as well. It fully supports the clutch, meaning that if you try to shift without pressing down on the clutch, you won’t go into the next gear. You also stall too! Another game that comes pretty close, but not as close as Live for Speed, would be GTR 2, another awesome game.It goes without saying that this device was well design, every detail was implemented meticulously. It retails for around $260+…it’s pretty expensive, but it’s definitely worth every penny. If you like racing games, I won’t recommend it to you….I’ll order you to buy it!

  1. I just bought one an hour ago and the damn steering wheel is the one thing that doesn’t work. At all. The shifter thinks that is is the gas pedal as well as the shifter. Could it be the game I’m playing won’t handle the wheel? (Need For Speed Underground 2)

  2. Could be a number of things really. I have the original NFSU and and Carbon it works fine with it. Check your driver software and look at the configurations. It also just might be a defective device. :(
