Cambodian New Year

Saturday April 12th kicks off the Cambodian New Year Celebration at the Buddhist temple in Silver Spring, MD (just minutes from D.C.) If you’re in the area make a point to stop by, you wont be disappointed.

Cambodian New Year or Chaul Chnam Thmey in the Khmer language, literally “Enter the New Year”, is the name of the Cambodian holiday that celebrates the new year. The holiday lasts for three days, most commonly, from April 13th to 15th, although Khmer living in other countries may change the dates so as to celebrate on the weekend. Sometimes the holiday falls between the 14th to 16th of April. This time of the year represents the end of the harvesting season. The farmers enjoy the fruits of their harvest and relax before the rainy season begins. (wikipedia)

Last year was a blast (photos) as there were thousands at the event (even with the rain). What can you expect? People from all cultures learning about Cambodia, Buddhism and the temple itself which also serves as a school (if you were looking to learn Cambodian or Cambodian folk dance, this is the place to go). There is a lot of traditional food prepared so come prepared to eat. It’s a great time and well worth the visit! Make sure you come earlier in the day, after 12 you may have to walk a bit to get in (parking does get a little crazy). Take a tour of the temple and remember that donations are always welcome. I was able to hang out with some of the monks a few years back and have really enjoyed going to the celebration every year since.

  1. Cool, Never heard of this before! Sounds like fun too! My sister lives in Silver Spring, maybe I’ll ask her if she wants to go to this …I was thinking about skipping the cherry blossom parade and street festival due to the rain anyway, lol. Never had cambodian food…or atleast that I am aware of (I sometimes eat at my Cambodian friends place and his grandma or mom would cook…but I’m not sure if it’s really Cambodian haha). Is it any good? :D
